Today, Campbell’s Soup Company announced its support for federal legislation requiring labels for  foods produced with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The company has already prepared labeling that will comply with Vermont’s pending GMO labeling law.

Campbells’ support is rooted in their belief that a national labeling standard for GMOs “would better inform consumers and would preempt numerous state labeling efforts, which are incomplete, impractical and confusing.” Campbell’s does not support any individual state GMO legislation.

The company plans to advocate for federal legislation that would require all foods and beverages regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to be clearly--and simply--labeled for the inclusion of GMOs. Campbells also supports the implementation of national labeling standards for claims made on non-GMO food packaging.

Whether or not a national standard comes to fruition, Campbell’s plans to label all of it’s products with ingredients that were derived from GMOs, and they believe such products are completely safe and of nutritional value. Doing so would require assistance from the FDA and approval from the USDA.
