We are sad to announce that former Food Safety Magazine editorial advisory board member Dr. Russ Flowers has passed away. Dr. Flowers was a food microbiologist who began his career at Silliker Laboratories as the laboratory director and advanced to president in 1990. He was instrumental in the creation of Mérieux NutriSciences, serving as the company's CEO from 1996 to 2007. He was then appointed Chairman of the Board and Chief Science Officer before retiring in 2013.
Russ was a leading researcher, author, and speaker in food microbiology, with particular interest in the development and validation of rapid analytical methods and laboratory performance. He was the recipient of many industry awards and honors. His legacy includes the growth of Mérieux NutriSciences as a recognized leader in food safety, which employs over 7,500 individuals worldwide.
