The Alliance for Food and Farming (AFF) has created an online tool that enables users to view the amount of produce a person would have to consume to experience health effects from pesticide residues.
The tool is based on data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Pesticide Monitoring Program (PMP) annual reports, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Data Program (PDP) annual summaries. The most recent PMP report, published in September 2024 and covering data from produce sampled in fiscal year 2022, found 96.2 percent of domestic samples and 89.5 percent of imported samples to be compliant with pesticide residue tolerances set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Similarly, USDA’s PDP summary for 2023 showed more than 99 percent of sampled products to be compliant with pesticide residue tolerances set by EPA, consistent with previous years.
For AFF’s tool, estimates about the number of servings a person would have to eat to experience health effects from pesticide residues in produce were calculated by toxicologists from the University of California's Personal Chemical Exposure Program.
The residue calculator covers 20 of the most popular fruits and vegetables consumed in the U.S., and includes estimates for men, women, teenagers, and children.
