Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc. has launched its new XP-Design Assay Salmonella Serotyping Solution designed for the rapid detection and precise characterization of Salmonella in food and environmental samples.
Salmonella are gram-negative, rod-shaped bacilli that can cause diarrheal illness in humans. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Salmonella is the most frequently reported cause of foodborne illness in the U.S, attributed to an estimated 1.4 million illnesses and more than 400 deaths annually.
Bio-Rad’s assays leverage real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to amplify and detect specific DNA sequences of target serotypes using fluorescent probes. Molecular serotyping of Salmonella allows for fast reaction and decision-making during an outbreak event, and can aid in the monitoring of specific serotypes in the food processing plant environment.
The XP-Design Assay Salmonella Serotyping Solution provides a flexible approach to identify Salmonella serotypes after initial screening. The ready-to-use solution contains oligonucleotides (primers and probes) that are highly specific to target serotypes, reducing the risk of cross-reaction and delivering reliable results.
