On October 17, 2018, the Cannabis Act went into effect in Canada for the purpose of preventing youth from accessing cannabis, and to displace the illegal cannabis market.
Now, Health Canada is collecting comments on draft regulations for cannabis products, including edibles. Public feedback is being gathered in hopes of minimizing the public health and safety risks associated with consuming cannabis-infused edibles. According to Health Canada, “These cannabis products will be permitted for legal sale under the Cannabis Act no later than October 17, 2019.”
Health Canada is encouraging comments from a variety of interested and affected groups and citizens:
- Provinces, territories, and municipalities
- Indigenous peoples
- Industry
- Patients and patient groups
- Health care practitioners
- The public health community
- Law enforcement
The three themes that affected parties should focus on when submitting comments are:
- Product rules, including THC limits
- Packaging and labeling, including allowances for smaller packages
- Requirements to control the quality of cannabis (good production practices)
To submit a comment on the safety of cannabis edibles directly to Health Canada, you can use this official online form.
You can also read, download, and/or print the consultation questions that are being used to collect feedback.
Written submissions can be sent via email to cannabis@canada.ca. They can also be mailed to:
