In 2023, Netflix released a documentary based on Poisoned, a novel by Jeff Benedict that stories the events of the 1993 foodborne illness outbreak caused by contaminated hamburger meat from Jack in the Box restaurants. The film, titled, Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food, has now received a nomination for Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary for the 45th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.
Featured in the documentary are prominent food safety attorney William (Bill) Marler, and food safety academic, advisor, advocate, and author Darin Detwiler, LP.D., M.A.Ed—both of whom have been featured on the Food Safety Matters podcast to discuss the events of the Poisoned book and/or their experience with the Poisoned documentary.
Bill began litigating foodborne illness cases in 1993 when he represented Brianne Kiner, the most seriously injured survivor of the historic Jack in the Box E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, in her landmark $15.6-million settlement with the company. The Poisoned novel chronicles the Jack in the Box outbreak and the rise of Bill as a food safety attorney.
Shortly following the release of the Netflix Poisoned documentary, Bill joined the Food Safety Matters podcast as a guest to discuss his lived experience as chronicled in Poisoned.
