A foodborne listeriosis outbreak in Canada has sickened at least 20 people, hospitalized 15, and caused three deaths. The outbreak has been linked to Silk- and Great Value-brand plant-based milks contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall, the full details of which can be viewed here.
Patients involved in the outbreak ranged from 7–89 years of age, with 70 percent of individuals aged 50 years or older. Illnesses were reported in Ontario (13), Quebec (five), Alberta (one), and Nova Scotia (one).
The onset of sicknesses occurred between August 2023 and July 2024, with the majority occurring in June 2024. More recent illnesses may continue to be reported in the outbreak.
