IFCO has launched a new innovation called Marina, a reusable fish crate that uses Bluetooth Low Energy tags and QR codes to enable real-time data collection, improving cold chain management from fishing boats to retail stores.
Single-use expanded polystyrene (EPS) boxes come with concerns over sustainability and environmental microplastics contamination, causing governments to tighten EPS regulations and necessitating alternative packaging solutions like Marina.
Marina is available exclusively through the IFCO SmartCycle circular pooling system, which means that the IFCO Fish Crates can be efficiently reused up to 120 times. Through this system, empty crates can be easily returned, reused, and, once they can no longer be used, sustainably recycled. IFCO ensures that the reusable fish crates are washed according to international standards of food safety and hygiene, and are efficiently pooled for sharing and reuse. Meeting fishing industry requirements, IFCO ensures a response time and delivery within 24 hours.
Nestable when empty and securely stackable when full, Marina saves space on ships, cuts carbon emissions in transport, and improves handling conditions. Its uniform dimensions are compatible with existing supply chains, automated logistics systems, and the IFCO Plastic Pallet, Dora.
Innovative features of Marina include:
- Double-wall isothermal construction for superior insulation at controlled temperatures, keeping products fresh for longer
- Tight-fitting lids, interlocking surfaces, and an easy-to-use strapping system ensures secure packing and stacking for transportation
- Track-and-trace Bluetooth Low Energy tags enable real-time data collection and analysis
- Smooth surfaces offer increased protection from damage and spoilage, cutting down on food loss and waste
- All-around sustainable packaging that is robust, reusable, and 100 percent recyclable, replacing single-use EPS boxes that can easily break down and pollute the marine environment.
