Steven Mandernach, J.D., is executive director at AFDO and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Food Safety Magazine. Prior to becoming executive director in 2018, he was the bureau chief for food and consumer safety at the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. Steven is a past president of AFDO. He has also served as the chair and co-chair for the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Alliance. Steven has co-authored many articles related to retail food safety, foodborne illness detection, and the integrated food safety system. He has a J.D. from Drake University Law School. He has completed graduate work in Food Safety at Michigan State University.
The recent lead chromate contamination incident in cinnamon applesauce pouches has underscored critical gaps in our national food recall system, and illustrates the urgent need to modernize food recall processes and enhance data-sharing among food safety and public health agencies.
A survey was sent to food industry trade association members representing food companies to determine what is known about food safety culture, food safety management systems, and active managerial control. The survey also asked about the implementation of such practices in support of a culture of food safety. The survey results indicate that many companies are well aware of these food safety concepts; however, many respondents are unsure whether their company is operating with true active managerial control. Opportunities were uncovered to inform and encourage engagement in active managerial control to a greater degree.
Industry officials in food safety who have been there commonly warn "you don’t want to be exchanging business cards with your regulators at the beginning of a food safety event." Whether an outbreak, recall, natural disaster, or other event, knowing your regulators in advance of the event results in a much more effective relationship during challenging times.
